What are Fiber Gelatin Silver Prints?

Before Polaroids, color film and the digital age, Black and White gelatin silver prints were the every day norm. In reality, they have been around for over 130 years and often are called silver gelatin by some. Believe it or not, many of these type of prints are still in good condition today, which proves their longevity.

Fiber based gelatin silver prints were first introduced in the late 1880’s, while inkjet prints were introduced in the late 1980’s. That is 100 years between them! So inkjet prints are still in their infancy stage. As a result, it’s only speculation on how long they will last, whereas gelatin silver prints have been around a very long time.

“True Black and White prints are only achieved on gelatin silver paper; removing any chance of color tint in print. For this photographer, no inkjet print can match or come close to the beauty and longevity of a fiber based, gelatin silver print.”
